Carousel Luxury Cinemas is the home of the Mixed Tape Film Series in which movies from previous decades are shown on their original 35 mm film. This week’s film was Robocop.
Robocop, originally released in 1987, follows the main character, Officer Alex Murphy, through a run-in with some local crime lords in which he is severely injured and pronounced legally dead. However, modern science is able to salvage his life by rebuilding his missing body parts to recreate him as Robocop. The only downside is: he no longer remembers who he is or what he did before he was Robocop.
The appeal of the Mixed Tape Film series is nostalgia. Sitting in the theater watching Robocop on its original film reel is like traveling back in time to 1987 and seeing it for the first time. Paired with the preview for the final film of the Mixed Tape film series, The Goonies, radiates a feeling that no one who grew up in the eighties, or even those who missed it, can resist.
The film created a nostalgic atmosphere, bringing in an audience interested in filling seats for the Mixed Tape experience, not because of "Blockbuster" or "Oscar-nominated" credits. In the edition of “Geeksboro: A guide to alternative film and TV events in Greensboro, NC,” which was handed to each viewer with the purchase of their ticket, Joe Scott, the brains behind the Mixed Tape Film series writes a few words, “Robocop is a superb piece of American art.” His heart-to-heart talk with the audience before the screening was enough to instill in each viewer his love for film.
Though the movie is no Die Hard, it does have its moments of action-packed violence, love and revenge. Also, the movie, as stated in “Geeksboro,” is "one of the more accurate predictions of the future than many others made before it. While most others predicted flying cars, this one simply predicted DVDs. However, in the future apparently typewriters would still be a necessity and people would still dress the same as they did in 1987."
Popcorn, nostalgia and a truly appreciative audience can do no wrong. The next movie on tap for the Mixed Tape Film series is slotted for May 6, the classic eighties film, The Goonies.
