Student support for the Spartans basketball team seems to be as high as ever. The Blue Crew is growing, and 500 tickets didn't last anytime at all last week. Student tickets went on sale for the Duke vs. UNCG basketball game on Monday morning, Nov. 28, at 8 am in the HHP. In about three hours, they were gone. Students started to line up at the ticket office at 6:30 in order to ensure a good seat for the game against the top team in the country.

"I knew we would get rid of all five hundred of them," said UNCG Tickets Manager, John Comer. "I just didn't think they would go as fast as they did." UNCG officials worked quickly to get in touch with the Coliseum about acquiring more tickets. The school was given an additional allotment of 300 tickets, and they were given out in the same manner last Thursday to UNCG students. They were available beginning at 8 am, and they didn't make it to noon. "There was a nice crowd," said Comer, "We have been real pleased with the interest shown by the students."

Associate Athletic Director and radio broadcaster Dick Stewart was pleased with the students' support. "It says something about the dedication and knowledge of our student fan base," said Stewart after UNCG defeated College of Charleston Saturday night.

With the game being on New Year's Eve and during the Christmas break, Stewart said it was somewhat surprising to see the tickets go so quickly. The Dec. 31 date at 1 pm was the best they could do however. "With it being on a Saturday we were hoping students could make it, and we also scheduled it earlier so traveling would be safer in the event of inclement weather. Hopefully that (the weather) won't be the case."

The total number of Spartan students with a ticket is now at 800, and while Duke fans are sure to pack the place, the Spartan fan club, The Blue Crew will not be intimidated. Co-president Elizabeth Alicea said before, "This is our home game."

The tickets will be located behind Duke's second half basket in the lower level. If you missed out on the free tickets, there are some still available through the Greensboro Coliseum's website. Remaining tickets are $30 apiece.

This game signifies the return of Spartans basketball to the Greensboro Coliseum after a two-year hiatus. UNCG last played there in February of 2003 against Appalachian State. If you can't make the game in person, be sure to catch the Spartans in their only regular-season televised game. The action can be seen regionally on Raycom/Jefferson Pilot stations.
