The UNCG Women's Basketball team came up big on Saturday afternoon, defeating the West Virginia Lady Mountaineers in Fleming Gym. The 2-3 Spartans got their first all-time win against a Big East opponent when they knocked off the Mountaineers 72-70.

This game saw the return of Pre-Season All Southern Conference point guard Kristen Boone, who had been sidelined with a thumb injury for six weeks prior to the season. "Terrified" was the one word Boone used to express her feelings about her season debut. "As soon as coach put me in I was nervous," said the sophomore from Upper Marlboro, MD. "But once I got in the flow of the game, I was fine." Boone recorded a team-high 16 points, five assists, and six steals in the win for the Spartans. "Kristen coming back was so timely," said 25th year head coach Lynee Agee, "Her presence on the court raised our team's confidence." UNCG also saw good contributions from junior Jasmine Byrd, who tallied 13 points and two assists, and senior Ashley Current and junior Irene Otamiri, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Both teams started off the game slow, plagued by missed shots and early fouls. West Virginia took an early 8-4 lead but the Spartans answered back with a 25-3 run that brought the score to 29-11 at the 5:16 mark.

The Spartan run was attributed to their stifling defense which forced 17 first-half Mountaineer turnovers. UNCG saw solid contributions from its bench as senior

Shanika Jackson and Boone accounted for four first-half steals apiece. Sophomore Jasmine Dixon also gave the Spartans a spark off the bench, as she stepped in for the injured junior Brittany Frazier, who suffered a knee injury in the first minute of the game. "JD did a great job," said Agee. "She had nice assists in addition to her defense and rebounding."

UNCG headed into halftime with a 37-23 lead after Byrd sank a three-pointer with 25 seconds left.

At the start of the second half, both teams looked a little rattled after each had a turnover on their first possession. UNCG was able to maintain a double-digit lead until West Virginia scored on a lay-up and brought the game to within nine points at the 11:56 mark.
