ACLU has your back
Issue date: 1/17/06 Section: Letters to the Editor
In response to "THE RIGHT ANGLE: Turning the tables" (Dec. 6), it is very intriguing that a person who admits she doesn't "know a whole lot about" what the ACLU is or does, has so much contempt for it. Here is a brief education on the American Civil Liberties Union.
It has been established for over 85 years as a non-profit and non-partisan public interest group. Its mission is to protect individual rights as designated by the Bill of Rights and the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 19th amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU does not claim to be judge nor jury. Rather, the ACLU does just as it promises. It takes on the cause to bring to trial over 6,000 cases per year that may possibly be in violation of an individual's constitutional guarantee to civil liberties.
I do not believe that the ACLU will win the case in question, in which a private citizen has violated a legal contract with a private entity. What is important, however, is not the outcome of the case. It is instead the notion that individual Americans have a loud voice in this nation through this entity we call the ACLU. It is the guard-dog that attacks every time the Government, Big Business, or private interest groups attempt to step onto the sacred ground of individual civil liberties.
The ACLU is the reason the Executive Branch of the Federal Government chose to secretly break the law and violate its constitutional boundaries over the last three years in spying on us law abiding citizens. The ACLU is the entity that will prevent the NSA from becoming the KGB. The ACLU is our safeguard, and it may one day be your savior when you come face to face with the chauvinists who control your beloved party.
