Calling for a change
Issue date: 1/31/06 Section: Letters to the Editor
Let me first say that the latest edition of the Carolinian have sparked conversation within my organization and friends for a while now. The articles written by Melissa Westmoreland were false and elaborate on her part. As someone stated before, research was not the best standpoint of the article. But that is not why I am writing my opinion. I just wanted to explain something to a one-sided group of individuals of this paper. Everyone has their right to freedom of speech. However, the students who read your articles deserve the right to have the truth given to them. Thank you to those individuals who began the process of learning.
Melissa brought up a good point. When a gentlemen asked Ms. Davis "what can I do" to change things, she simply did not respond. Yes, many were upset, but many were not. I was wondering about her no response myself. However, I have become aware of the true reason. She wanted us as the future leaders of this world to get our ideas together to make those effective changes within our communities. Could she give a real answer? Yes, but does she know our community or do we know more about it and what is needed? Miss Westmoreland should know this since she is the true journalist of this paper. I believe that went into the program expecting it to fail or not to be good at all.
Having someone of Angela Davis' status speaking at our school is the one of the historial things to accomplish as your fellow writer elaborated on in his story. It's hard to find a woman of such strength to look up to as a young Black woman in a world where I am the double negative.
I am personally calling for a change of the Carolinian, due to the latest editions, filled with radical issues that an award winning paper should not be discussing. I am calling for a change of attitudes of students - get out, learn about the world, learn about the culture of the country, and get out and help. I will try my best to not just write this opinion letter, but go out and make a change. UNCG=Diversity. How about the Carolinian set a good example and show us as students how to be diverse? Can we have articles with substances that make me think, instead of make me wonder why do we have a paper?
Maybe the whole point of your article was to begin the change of our generation getting more involved, Melissa. I am still unclear of your intention, but I would like to call all my fellow Spartans to get involved and make a change within the world.
