Guy Sanders, former Associate Director of Housing and Residential Services, was sent on investigative leave over the holiday break, under allegations of illegally hacking into the e-mail account of an unidentified UNCG employee.
According to WUAG News, Captain Paul Lester, of UNCG Police Support Service Division, helped explain the situation.
"The investigation was basically about some questions regarding accessing some e-mail which we proved was not to be the case."
Although Sanders was sent on investigative leave, he was cleared of all allegations and returned for the 2006 spring semester. Upon Sanders' arrival he was notified by Dr. Mary Hummel, Director of Housing and Residence Life, of his reassignment as Director of Special Projects, which was a move Sanders claimed to be unaware of. Even though Sanders refused to go on the record he left WUAG this comment,
"I am not the Associate Director of Special Projects. I'm working on a number of different projects for the offices of Housing and Residence Life from dealing with the new department buildings, to technology, to room assignments. And these new duties so far are great and I'm looking forward to completing the projects and taking on new projects as they come through."
Dr. Hummel reassigned Sanders due to his previous background, which was excellent for his new position.
Dr. Hummel is new to UNCG, having only been here for six months. When she joined the University, Housing and Residence Life was undergoing review, which happens to each office in student affairs every five years, and as the review was under way Hummel was devising her own plan for reorganization.
This new plan began with what she calls "Phase One" in which all the direct reports come straight to her, and she also announced to the staff that there would be some changes and reorganization. There is also the position of Associate Director for Operations, which is still vacant. This position entails overseeing housekeeping, campus facilities, life safety, and capital improvement projects. This brand new position was a product of "Phase One." Dr. Hummel commented on the current status of Housing and Residence Life,
"It's a very exciting time for Housing. We have the opportunity to set the direction for housing and students, an example being the new apartments, also the renovations for existing halls and new programmatic initiatives for residents."
