Erskine Bowles is known as a man of action. He co-established a Charlotte-based merchant bank, worked alongside former US President Bill Clinton in the United Nations' relief effort for the tsunami and held leadership positions in the White House.
"He's a doer," said Provost Dr. A. Edward Uprichard of the North Carolina businessman.
Bowles' next great undertaking will be his ascension to the post of UNC system President, a job that, according to the News and Record, Bowles has always sought after. On April 12, Bowles will be inaugurated in UNCG's own Aycock Auditorium.
The President-elect succeeds system president Molly Corbett Board and took office January 1.
Bowles' choice of UNCG as the site of this high profile event will make UNCG a center of attention across North Carolina.
"UNCG is a great university and I think it's great that we actually have this opportunity," said Student Government Association president Sandy Dempsey.
"I'm thrilled that he chose us for his inauguration," said UNCG Chancellor Patricia A. Sullivan.
"I hope it sends the message that he values us," continued Sullivan.
"I think we deserve this," said acting SGA Vice President Donald Hughes. "We're a growing university. We have developing academic and sports programs."
According to the 2004-2005 Chancellor's Report, UNCG was recognized as a 'Best Value' by the Princeton Review. UNCG has two excellence professorships within the faculty and the school is making preparations for an International Honors College. UNCG is also thought to be the most diverse campus in the UNC system.
"I think the main reason [for Bowles' choice was] that this is his home town," said Provost Uprichard. "We have a terrific university, we can show hospitality toward the public, and it's an opportunity for us to show our campus."
President-elect Bowles is a native son of North Carolina who owns a personal piece of state history. His father was the late North Carolina statesman Hargrove 'Skipper' Bowles, who ran for governor and is himself a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill.
