Bathroom reading is always interesting, but who knew that it could lead to new friends and the involvement in an equally interesting sport. Senior and Match Secretary, Kim Murdoch, discovered the women's club rugby team via a flyer she read during the second half of her freshmen year in her dorm's bathroom, and like many rookies, Murdoch did not know a lot about the sport.

Rugby is an intense game. It consists of two 40-minute halves, there are no timeouts, and the participants rarely wear any type of protective padding.

"Rugby is fun because it is the ultimate team sport, where every player is important, so no matter who you are you make a difference on the team," said Murdoch. "I think it's different because it's a very social sport, where we all play really hard on the field against a team, but then afterwards we can all sit down and have some pizza and hangout after the game.

"People should play rugby if they are interested in being on a team where they matter, where they get an amazing workout, and learn something new at every practice. I think people should watch rugby because it's a fun game! Even if you don't really know what's going on you can always cheer for your team! GO SPARTANS!" exclaimed an enthused Murdoch.

The UNCG women's club rugby team has been in existence since 2000, and is played in both the fall and the spring. While the team participates in matches, they prefer to use the fall season to concentrate on developing rookie players as well as improving the skill levels of the veteran players. It is during the spring that the competitive Matrix season begins, but in the fall the NC State Tournament is held during the last weekend of October.

"[The NC State Tournament] is an entire weekend event with games on both Saturday and Sunday and a social Saturday night. Most teams go and we play against the teams we play during the regular season. It is about the same level of competition that we have in our normal games. I think our team will do well in this year's tournament," said Murdoch.
