The 2006-2007 North Carolina Dance Festival is coming to UNCG on Oct. 19-21, showcasing eight companies that include troupes and performers from the Triad area, including Robin Gee, Heidi Echols Godfrey, Sean Sullivan, the Wesley Williams Dance Theatre, and Sidelong Dance Co., Duane Cyrus, the Jan Van Dyke Dance Group, and the John Gamble Dance Theater. Other touring groups and performers include Justin Tornow, Rodger Belman, Carol Finley, Amy Pierce, and E.E. Balcos.
UNCG is the first stop on the roster for the NCDF, which will then go on to perform at Valborg Theater at Appalachian State University, Jones Auditorium at Meredith College, Robinson Hall at UNC Charlotte, Citystage Theater in Wilmington, and the Diana Wortham Theater is Asheville.
Started in 1991, the NCDF is part of the North Carolina Dance Project, and tours annually to six communities in N.C. Originally the dance showcase was a weekend of dance performances highlighting N.C. artists in 1991. The showcase in its original inception was an answer to a question presented by UNCG dance faculty members on how to encourage students to stay and work in N.C. as well as a way to introduce students to dance artists in the area and encourage an active dance community.
Shows will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6 for UNCG students.
