FRESHMEN PHENOMS: Freshman setter Lisa Fawell (4) recorded a school record 66 assists in UNCG's win over Liberty last Tuesday. Catherine Hanners (8) produced 36 digs in the same match, also a new Spartan record.

The UNCG (15-8, 4-5 SoCon) volleyball team broke three school records in a 3-1 win against non-conference foe Liberty last Tuesday night. Three players set school records for four game matches in the victory.

Senior outside hitter Theresa Hart tallied 26 kills, which snapped Kelley Evans' record of 25 kills back in 1997. Hart also recorded 25 digs. Freshman setter Lisa Fawell's 66 assists effort broke the previous record 64 assists by Robyn Jameson in 2000.

Freshman defensive specialist Catherine Hanners came up with 36 digs to top Rebekah Faulise's record of 31 digs back in 2004.

Sophomore Kaityln Nortz and senior Lauren Keiser came up with impressive efforts as well, tallying double-digit performances of 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Nortz also tallied six blocks while freshman Kayleigh Knerr came up with a season-high 27 digs in the defensive attack. The four-game match was a battle as the Spartans won two out of their three games only by a margin of two.

After the match, head coach Shawn Garus said he was happy about the win but not as excited about the team's overall performance. "Tonight was a good win but I don't think that we played our best," said the second year head coach. "I look forward to getting back in the gym practicing on some of our problems."

The Spartans looked dominant early, jumping out to a 9-3 lead in the first game. Liberty chipped away at the Spartan lead until they tied the match at 12 apiece. UNCG regained the lead and kept it at two points until Liberty answered back and took the lead at 26-25. The game went back and forth from there until Liberty tied it at 30 but a kill by Nortz and a Liberty attack error gave UNCG the 32-20 win.

Game two saw a change of pace as Liberty captured the lead first, but a persistent UNCG team tied the game at 9-9 with four straight points. The game saw 11 lead changes with UNCG leading for the final time at the 26-25 mark. A Liberty kill tied the game up at 26 and the Flame never trailed again as two UNCG attack errors pushed Liberty to the win, 30-28. After the break, UNCG came out with determination, going on the attack early. Their impressive offensive effort was highlighted by a 12-3 run to give them a 23-13 lead over the Flames.
