The Spartans' overall season record is 7-7-2, while their SoCon record is 6-0-1. The team's SoCon record is more than just the record of a winning team; it is the record for the SoCon's women's soccer first place team.
Davidson became the latest victim of UNCG's hot play, as Shannon Donovan's two-goal performance led the Spartans to a 4-1 win on Sunday.
In a pre-season coaches' poll, the Spartans were chosen to win the SoCon women's soccer regular season. However, at the beginning of the season it did not appear that this prediction would prove to be true. The team entered their season knowing that they were at a disadvantage.
"Even before we started preseason we had seven to eight players who were either injured or dealing with an injury of some sort," said head coach Eddie Radwanski.
An extremely tough non-conference schedule early on did the Spartans no favors - at least not in the win-loss column.
"Our schedule was the toughest number one non-conference schedule in the country. We played teams from the Top 25 and other teams who were ranked in their region. We play this type of schedule to get us ready for conference play," explained Radwanski.
The Spartans geared up for regular season play with an exhibition game versus Duke, then-ranked 12th nationally. It appeared the Spartans were going to be shutout, but sophomore Amanda Olson, a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth, connected with the ball and shot it past the Blue Devil's keeper. The Spartans ultimately fell 4-1.
The Spartans opened their season with a matchup against William and Mary. With UNCG scoring the first goal, it appeared that the previous game against Duke was just a fluke for the Spartans, but they were unable to hold their ground and were ultimately defeated by a score of 3-1.
UNCG's defense proved to be strong, but not strong enough against the big name schools UNC, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest, which all resulted in 1-0 losses for the Spartans. The Spartans continued their losing streak against Miami and Tennessee, but this unfortunate streak was finally snapped when freshman Jennifer Bronson scored her first collegiate goal against Mercer at the Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.
