UNCG Glee Clubs encourage new members, prepare for concert
Deanna Haynes
Issue date: 10/24/06 Section: Arts & Entertainment
The UNCG Glee Club is an incredible group of singers divided into a Men's Glee Club (directed by Cory Alexander) and a Women's Glee Club (directed by Kelly Turner). The Glee Club encourages those interested in singing to join, emphasizing that one is not required to be a music major in order to be considered.
In order to join, one must complete an audition. Auditions consist of the singing of scales and doing warm-up exercises. A site-singing performance is also required. The audition gives the directors a chance to learn the sound of one's voice in order to place them in the correct section; auditions are not a determining factor of one's acceptance into the Glee Club.
In fact, the directors of the Glee Club explained that very few people interested in joining are turned away. Do not fear the audition. It is quick and simple, nothing to be frightened about, and one does not have to have anything prepared beforehand. If one decides to pursue the Glee Club and later wants to move on to something else, they are free to do so. The only requirements for this course are for ladies, a specific black dress and black folder; for men, a tuxedo and black folder. No books are necessary.
The Glee Clubs will be holding a concert on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the School of Music. The Women's Glee Club will be performing five pieces dealing with different stages of a relationship. One is a flirtatious piece involving the beginning stage of a relationship when everything is new and there is so much to be learned. Another piece is about being deeply and passionately in love, and one is an anti-male piece about the breakup stage.
The Men's Glee Club will be performing five pieces also. Their performance does not have a theme, but is a wide range of classical pieces ranging from sixteenth century to present day pieces. The Male and Female Glee Clubs combine to sing three pieces together. These pieces are those of Handel, Rachmaninoff, and a Canadian folk song. Admittance price is three dollars for students (Student ID cards must be shown).
Future concert dates include a concert on Nov. 1 and one on Sunday, Dec. 3 - a Christmas concert held in the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
