Conservative Republican and Winston-Salem resident Vernon Robinson has mastered the art of mudslinging.
As a candidate for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 13th District of North Carolina, Robinson is throwing everything he's got at incumbent Brad Miller and maybe a little more.
In a recent T.V. commercial, Robinson claims, "Instead of spending money on cancer research, Brad Miller spent your money to study the masturbation habits of old men," and that he "even spent your tax dollars to pay teenage girls to watch pornographic movies with probes connected to their genitalia."
In another ad, tagged on Robinson's website as "Brad Miller's Mariachi Party," he claims "If Miller had his way, America would be nothing but one big fiesta for illegal aliens and homosexuals."
Robinson also accuses Miller of "denying our soldiers the body armor they need" and "instead of spending money on sickle-cell research," voting to spend money to "study the sex lives of Vietnamese prostitutes in San Francisco." And it doesn't end there.
Robinson, a 50-year-old African American who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, prides himself on saying what no one else will. His fund raising has netted him close to $830,000 from supporters who pay him to speak his mind.
"Without the immediate and generous financial support of you and folks like you, I will not have the resources to bypass the liberal media and communicate directly with the voters through TV, radio and mail," Robinson's website says. "Help me get more ads on the air."
In May Robinson defeated two weaker opponents in a primary, gaining 63% of the votes. He then implied in a letter to the public that Miller was a homosexual with a "soul mate" in San Francisco. He's also implied that Miller is a homosexual because he has no kids.
According to Miller, who has been married for 25 years, his wife has been interviewed on three different television stations about his sexual orientation. He has had to explain that his wife can't bear children because of an operation she had before they were married.
