Competitors were helping each other by giving pointers and discussing different strategies to get to the top of the wall. Discussions about future and past outdoor excursions mingled with the scent of rubber that was coming from the soft pieces of rubber-like rock that were lining the ground beneath the climbing wall. If it were not for the window chalk advertising that there was a competition occurring at The Edge, one would not think that there was in fact a rock climbing competition occurring.
On Sunday UNCG's Outdoor Adventures program held its 9th annual rock climbing competition. The competition began at noon and ended with an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. A total of 28 people came out to compete in the competition.
It was separated into three brackets: beginners, intermediate, and advanced, for both men and women; the women, however, did not have an advanced bracket.
In the beginners bracket for the women's part of the competition Kendren Spencer took first place, senior Lindy Drugatz took second place, and freshmen Danielle Balmer and Jessica Washington tied for third place. Balmer and Washington did participate in a tiebreaker because they said that they were friends and wanted to split the prize instead of compete against each other.
Junior Kiera Gallup walked away with first place in the women's intermediate bracket, Rebeca Tomaszewski received second place, and junior Lauren Geismar won third place.
In the men's beginners bracket freshmen John Pozner took third place. There was a tie for first place between junior Brian White and sophomore Tyler Foust. To break the tie both men had to scale the climbing wall again, but this time they had to take the intermediate level path. Ultimately, White racked up more points thus taking second place, which gave Foust the third place position.
Sophomore John Read took first place in the men's intermediate level competition and senior Hunter Ives grabbed second. But the star of this bracket was Daniel Kolbas who took third place. Kolbas began climbing only two weeks prior to the competition.
"[Kolbas] only started climbing two weeks ago and he took third place in the intermediate bracket! It's amazing. He has a really great future in climbing ahead of him," said junior Meredith Budlong, the coordinator of this year's competition.
