The University Teaching and Learning Center's (TLC) sole purpose was for the use of holding UNCG's extensive video and film collection and equipment. The TLC's collections were once located in the McNutt Building, but after the area was renovated this past summer, the TLC has a new location inside the McIver building and is now home to the building's three-level art gallery.

Before the renovations to the McIver area, you may remember it as the design lab for the Interior Architecture department and home to McIver Gallery. The gallery space was emptied during the renovations but has now been reopened.

"We moved this summer from our old quarters in McNutt. McNutt, as you may know, has no windows, and we are already enjoying being able to see daylight," said Nanny Foster, Coordinator of Media Acquisition and Circulation for TLC.

Phil Lagas-Rivera, a student at UNCG, is organizing and hanging shows in the gallery space for an internship credit this semester. The art now featured in the gallery is a series of comics and illustrations and will be on display until Nov. 9.

"I chose the theme of comics and illustrations because of the juxtaposition of hanging 'low art' in a 'fine art' space. I also thought it was a medium that most people can relate to and enjoy, and would thus get people interested and check it out," said Lavas-Rivera.

And a fine space it is. All of the levels don't have art hanging yet, but the folks at the TLC are keeping their fingers crossed in hopes that the place will grow.

"We're hoping it will bring in more people and give them a chance to discover our other services," said Foster. "We also want to give student artists a chance to see their hard work enjoyed and appreciated. And probably most important to me personally, we hope it will contribute to a spirit of community among artists and for students, faculty and staff."

The theme for the next show on the schedule is prints, or any work that will be made wholly or in part with printmaking techniques. Submissions for the next show are Nov. 8, from 4-7p.m., and the actual show will take place on Nov. 10. Currently, there is no sign outside of the building indicating the new location of the TLC and where the new art gallery is, but it's on Walker Ave. behind the Carmichael building. The entrance is just up the stairs under the covered brick walkway.

The TLC also offers a very wide selection of free video rentals. They are open Monday-Thursday from 8a.m.-9 p.m. and on Friday from 8a.m.-5p.m. To learn more information about the gallery or the other services the TLC has to offer, stop by, or email Nanny Foster at nbfoster@uncg.edu, or visit the TLC website at www.uncg.edu/tlc.
