On a cold fall evening, the leaves turning in the distance, students were eating banana splits and learning about alcoholism.
On Thursday, Oct. 25 the Wellness Center of Student Health Services and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority hosted B.Y.O.B. - Bring Your Own Banana - which was the last of week-long activities held during National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.
Activities prior to Thursday's festivities included tabling in the Atrium on Monday, and Tuesday night Phillips Residential Hall hosted Alcohol and Other Drug Jeopardy. Tabling was also held by M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), another sponsor of the B.Y.O.B. event.
Thursday night's festivities included information on alcohol use and abuse, Alcohol Jeopardy, and ice cream, for which previously-distributed flyers instructed everyone coming to the event to bring their own banana. Ice cream, as well as music was provided at the event in the Quad, although the main focus was on alcohol.
B.Y.O.B., or Bring Your Own Beer as it is usually known on campuses across the country, is a problematic phenomenon because it relates to the problem of under-age drinking by college students.
According to the Campus Police website, there were 111 liquor law violations that resulted in arrests and 27 referrals in 2005. Zero Tolerance and Aggressive Driving Campaigns have notably increased these numbers, as the website states.
According to a study done in 2003 by the National Department of Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, alcohol is the number one drug of choice among children and adolescents

Actually, Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood co-sponsored this event and was tabling that night with free condoms and info on safe sex and STIs. Can the Carolinian get anything right, ever?
