Don't worry, though - Broom, which was out Oct. 24, isn't the same album that has been getting rave reviews since it was first released in 2005. It has been re-mastered by Mark Bilyeu of Big Smith, improving on the somewhat lacking sound of the original self-recorded version. The CD book also contains more artwork.
The album opens up with "Pangea," which is rich in twanging guitar and the perfect hook. Every track after lives up to the previous one and improves on it with an even catchier and intoxicating mixture of vocals reminiscent of early Wilco with a mixing in of Ambulance Ltd.
This is not an album to pass up. It is essentially the perfect album, with slick guitars and melodic piano pieces. The vocals are calm and catchy, with lyrics that anyone can connect with at some level. This isn't a rock opera, or a concept album, both of which are becoming increasingly popular, but simply a collection of really good songs.
If you are a fan of bands such as The Shins, Of Montreal, Wilco, and Ambulance Ltd., SSLYBY is a band that you will most certainly love. Broom can be purchased on Amazon.com and the band's label, www.polyvinylrecords.com. Tour dates and news can be found on their MySpace, www.myspace.com/boris, and their official website: www.morawk.com/boris.
