The UNCG Volleyball team snapped a three game losing streak last Tuesday night with a win against city rival North Carolina A&T. The five game match, 26-30, 30-20, 30-24, 27-30 and 15-12, marked the 18th win for the Spartans this season which is the most from a UNCG team since 1995.
The Spartans were led by senior Theresa Hart with 23 kills while Kaitlyn Nortz came in second with 20 kills on the match. Freshman Branagan Fuller also posted a double-digit effort with 15 kills and freshman Lisa Fuller tallied 65 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Catherine Hanners led the defensive effort once again with 27 digs while Hart pumped out another 17 for the Spartans.
The Spartans carried their intensity into conference play on Saturday when they faced the Georgia Southern Bulldogs in Fleming Gym. The 3-0 sweep of the Bulldogs improved UNCG's record to 19-11 overall and 7-8 in the conference. The Spartans were led by Nortz and senior Lauren Keiser, who each posted 16 kills. Hart finished with 15 kills and a game high 16 digs while Fawell dished out 55 assists, which was one shy of the school record set in 1994 by Liz Gremillion. Hanners and freshman Kayleigh Knerr recorded 15 and 14 digs, respectively, for the match.
UNCG dominated early, starting out in game one with a 4-1 lead. The Spartans later extended the lead to 14-9 before the Bulldogs answered back and brought the score within one at the 19-18 mark. The Spartans were able to hold off Georgia Southern as they took game one 30-27.
UNCG started game two in similar fashion, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs were able to match the Spartan effort and tie the game at nine apiece on a Spartan attack error. However, two Spartan kills helped UNCG regain the lead, which it never gave up, as they went into the intermission with a 30-26 win. UNCG came out of the intermission and put the match away, never relinquishing their lead and cruising to victory with a 30-22 win over Georgia Southern.
The Spartans end their regular season this week with two conference matches in Fleming Gym. They host The Citadel on Friday at 7 p.m. and College of Charleston on Saturday at 2 p.m. before heading off to the Southern Conference Tournament in Boone. The Tournament runs Nov. 16-19.
