The UNCG women's basketball team improved its record to 15-8 on the season and 8-4 in the Southern Conference with a win over Furman on Saturday afternoon.
The 65-58 win was UNCG's fifth straight victory over the Paladins. After the game, head coach Lynne Agee expressed how happy she was with her team's victory. "This was a tough game. We knew they would play us tough at home and they did. I'm proud of the way our team played together today."
Senior KaLeah Latham led the way with 15 points and 15 rebounds, posting her third double-double in the last four games. Junior Kristen Boone and senior Jasmine Byrd also came up big for the Spartans scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. Boone also led the team with four assists and three steals. The Spartans had an impressive offensive showing, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and dishing out 18 assists. UNCG started the game in familiar form, not allowing Furman to score a field goal for the game's first seven minutes. Furman answered back with three quick buckets to take the lead but UNCG was not rattled as it forced some key Paladin turnovers to regain the lead at the 7:12 mark. The Spartans went into halftime with a 28-20 lead after going on an 8-3 run to end the half.
The Spartans picked up right where they left off at the start of the second half, going on a 4-0 run to push their lead to 32-20. Furman finally got its offense going, connecting on four straight buckets to cut the UNCG lead to 50-36 with eight minutes remaining. Furman gave UNCG a run for its money, going on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to six with a just over five minutes remaining. However, UNCG stopped the run with two straight baskets to push its lead back to 10 points. UNCG would never give up the lead again as it forced three key Furman turnovers and put the Paladins away to earn its eighth conference win of the season.
UNCG started the week off in SoCon play against conference powerhouse Chattanooga in Fleming Gym. Despite beating the Lady Mocs earlier in the season on the road UNCG just could not hold on as they fell 83-66 on Monday night.
The Spartans had no answer for Chattanooga's barrage of 3-point shots, especially by freshman Jenaya Wade-Fray, who connected on 6-of-6 from behind arc to finish with a career-high 24 points.
After the game, Agee's disappointment was very apparent. "We obviously played very poorly. This was the most difficult weekend we've probably ever faced. We played horribly. We couldn't focus, we couldn't walk through and we looked exactly like we were out to lunch."
Despite the loss, UNCG had three players in double figures as Boone and senior Irene Otamiri led the way with 14 points a piece and Byrd followed with 13 points on the evening. Latham led with nine rebounds while Otamiri led with five assists and a game-high five steals.
UNCG returns to action on Saturdayto take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Fleming Gym. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
