The UNCG women's basketball team extended its current winning streak to three games on Saturday afternoon after a dominating victory over Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State.
The 81-62 victory marked the tenth conference win for the Spartans this season. The day was also a ceremonious one as former Spartan lady hoops star Melinda Goodson had her number retired by the UNCG Athletic Department.
Goodson, who wore #42, became the second women's player and the fourth player overall to have her jersey retired in Fleming Gym. The two-time All-Conference standout, who played from 1996-2000, was the school's All-Time leading scorer in the Division I era and second all-time with 1,464 points in her career. Goodson was also named a Street and Smith All-American Honorable Mention pick during her junior season.
After the ceremony, Goodson said her success at UNCG was due to the help of a lot of people in her life. "I'm excited about the honor of having my jersey retired. I just want to thank everyone really. There have been some people who have helped me along the way, coach (Lynn) Agee, coach Carol (Peschel) and my teammates because they were back there too. I'm very honored to be among the ones with their jersey retired. It's a very humbling experience."
With her high school players cheering her along the way, Goodson says she returned to her home of Roxboro, N.C. to coach girl's Basketball at Person High School.
There was more to be excited about on the court, as the Spartans had four players in double figures with junior guard Kristen Boone leading the way with 18. Boone also had six assists on the afternoon. Senior captain Irene Otamiri finished with 16 points and six steals while her fellow classmate Jasmine Byrd tallied 12.
Junior Brittany Frazier recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Frazier also had a game high five blocks.
After the game, Agee said she was impressed with Frazier's performance. "I was very pleased with the way Brittany Frazier played this afternoon. She played a physical game and really turned in a great performance for us."
