Recently, two UNC schools have withdrawn from the Association of Student Government, claiming that the ASG was "in shambles."

After UNCG's Student Government Association attended the ASG's September meeting, John Bryant, SGA president, said he believes these two schools had come away from the meeting with a different set of feelings than UNCG did.

"I would disagree that the ASG is 'in shambles' because of the way that the president's council was able to meet and work things through together very professionally," commented Bryant.

Bryant does not imagine that the UNCG SGA would be withdrawing from the ASG anytime soon.

On Wednesday, Sept. 19, the SGA held an open student forum, where many of the student body were able to bring up questions and concerns.

Bryant said he believes that of all the topics discussed at the forum, there are four main concerns the "Current Concerns" committee can work on and see the most improvement on. One of these issues was bookstore prices.

"SGA and the State with General Assembly measures have been working on lowering the price of textbooks for years now," said Bryant. "Next semester there should be a state-mandated textbook rental or lease system in place on campus for some classes, and the idea of a full rental system is being discussed in committees now."

Other issues the committee is working on include hours for on-campus food services and Jackson Library, as well as a communication issue between the school and commuter students.

"With almost three-fourths of the student body making a commute of some distance to school for class, there needs to be a way that issues and programs reach out to them," added Bryant.

With all the concerns and issues the students had, they did voice praises that the Financial Aid Office was doing the best it could to work with students and get them the most possible money to continue their education.

Despite having to relieve three of the SGA Senators, the SGA is also excited about their successful elections held earlier in the month.

"SGA wants all of its members to feel that they have a responsibility to the student body to perform the job that they are elected to. These three members were not contributing to the organization and were not fulfilling their duty to the student body," said Bryant.

"I do not think that there is any reason to try to refill these positions because SGA just completed a successful election and there are senators and officers from all sections of the student body represented in the Senate," he added.

The next SGA meeting will take place Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Maple room of the EUC. Any student with problems or concerns with any part of the university is welcome to attend and discuss them during a specific section of the meeting.

If students cannot make this meeting, they can also use the SGA website, www.uncgsga.org.
