With lightning threatening from above, UNCG's women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers last Friday night.

The opening minutes belonged to the Lady Vols as their crisp, quality passing led to Spartan mistakes.

As the game progressed, the Spartans found defensive rhythms that eventually lead to some UNCG offensive play.

The first half of the game was coming to a close and the score was still tied at 0-0, but then, with just minutes left in the half, UNCG's Katie Jordan put the ball past the Lady Vols' goalkeeper. It appeared that the Spartans had taken the lead, but the officials took away the hope of victory when they called the Spartans offside, thus nullifying the goal.

At the end of the first half the Spartans had five shots to the Lady Vols' nine. It appeared the game was swaying in favor of the Lady Vols, but both teams worked their ends of the field well.

Whatever was said at halftime by the teams' respective coaches led to a much-intensified game as each side picked up physicality.

Lightning struck for the Lady Vols when Tennessee's Emily Redberg put the ball past the Spartans' goalkeeper, Katherine Ryan. Redberg quickly knocked in a pass from fellow teammate Kylee Rossi making the score 1-0.

With just under a minute left in the match, the Lady Vols lengthened their lead when Mick Imgram booted in an unassisted goal making the score 2-0.

The Spartans fought hard until the last possible second. This was proven when UNCG's Kristin Player corralled a loose ball and fired it past the outstretched fingers of the Lady Vols' goalkeeper, Jamiel Johnson, into the bottom right corner of the net.

The last 47 seconds proved to be of no help as the Spartans fought bravely but ultimately in vain to score a tying goal against the Lady Vols. The Spartans lost 2-1.

Spartan goalkeeper, Katherine Ryan, received the Greg Harrison UNCG Player of the Game award for her efforts against the Lady Vols.

The Spartans begin conference play when they hit the road to take on Wofford on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6:00 p.m.
