UNCG's men's soccer team lengthened their unbeaten streak to five when they defeated the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks last Saturday night. Last Wednesday night the Spartans took on UNC-Charlotte and beat them by a score of 1-0.
A line of severe thunderstorms delayed the Spartans' match against UNC-Wilmington by more than an hour.
Even though the delay ended and the match commenced, it still seemed that both teams were still under the influence of the delay, as neither team could make anything happen.
But just as the night sky opened up over the city of Wilmington so did the second half of the match.
Jokull Elisabetarson scored the first goal of the match when he took a penalty kick that was given to the Spartans after Thomas Campbell was pulled down in the box. This goal was Elisabetarson's fifth of the season and it is his fourth successfully converted penalty kick of the year.
The Seahawks' Indy Smith tied the game at 1-1 when he knocked a deflection off a cross into the back of the net. The goal was Smith's first of the season.
The Spartans answered back less than five minutes later when Chris Ethier fired a pass from teammate Tim Masters past the Seahawks' goalkeeper making the score 2-1. The goal was Ethier's first as a Spartan.
Ethier also became the eighth different Spartan to score a goal this season. It appears that Spartan head coach Michael Parker's early season worries about his team's offensive efforts have been put to rest.
The Seahawks were not going to accept the fact of a potential loss easily. With less than 10 minutes left in the match, UNC-Wilmington's Daniel Roberts blasted a pass from teammate Jon Kearns from 20 yards out to tie the score at 2-2.
The rain delay had already prolonged the game longer than anticipated, and it seemed the Spartans were not content with prolonging the game even further by going into overtime.
Just 48 seconds after Roberts' game tying goal and with just nine minutes left in the match, Campbell headed in a low cross from teammate David Worthen making the final score 2-3.
UNCG's goalkeeper, Nate Berry, had two saves on the night while UNC-Wilmington's goalkeeper, Brock Duckworth, had three saves.
Both teams seemed to be evenly matched in UNCG's game against UNC-Charlotte last Wednesday night as neither team's offense could make anything happen until the 74th minute of the match.
After being in the game for only two minutes, UNCG's Corey Maret's scored his first collegiate goal and the only game of the match.
The Spartan defense protected Maret's efforts as the 49ers had only two shots in the last 15 minutes of the match.
Berry recorded the shutout and had seven saves on the night.
The Spartans conclude their four game road trip and begin conference play when they take on Appalachian State on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m.
