With the 2008 presidential election quickly approaching, people all across the nation are taking part in events such as rallies, forums, and debates regarding the upcoming election. Young people in particular can sometimes seem disinterested or nonchalant when the subject of politics arises.

Sometimes when heated political discussions arise, they only lead to turmoil between collegues, friends, and family units. Corey Miller, a senior, says, "Whenever my friends and I start talking about politics, someone's feelings always end up getting hurt. I wish that there were some way for our generation to voice our opinions without people looking down on us for our beliefs."

"Politicin' and Poetry"'s purpose is just that.

"Politicin' and Poetry" is a campus-involved event dealing with political theories and evaluations. As an outlet for feelings and concerns, "Politicin' and Poetry" will give students the opportunity to meet other students who have similar or opposing views, and learn how to channel their power in a positive way. Sponsored by the African-American Studies Program, events like these increase awareness of political issues affecting our daily lives as the youth of America.

This release of thoughts and words will occur on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Moore Nursing Auditorium Room 103. All students are invited to attend and encouraged to either read or recite anything regarding political issues today. There is no charge for this event.

Students may come prepared with a short performance or some form of a poetry reading. This open-mic event will also be featuring the lyrical talent of Amaris Howard (www.myspace.com/amaris7) and D. Noble (www.myspace.com/querillafire).

The AFS Program only asks that all who come "Keep in Clean..Keep it Positive", as stated on the AFS website.
