What free speech?

This Thursday I was walking out of the library past the statue toward the Stone Building. There were a number of tables set up with different political groups at each one. Now, for some reason the cops were out there monitoring the situation the entire time, which freaks me out a bit since I live in one of the most "free" societies on Earth. One of the cops took a sign that was being held by one of the student activists - I believe it was a socialist - and tore it to pieces.
Now I don't affiliate myself with the socialists; as a matter of fact, they scare me. However, its a shame on this university that they have set up such a place where freedom of thought and expression are so locked down. The university is a place where our society looks up to when trying to validate or understand current decisions and issues. It can't do that by denying information the chance to flow within its own walls. This puts a black eye on this university and the UNC system as a whole.
