It has been a seesaw season so far for the UNCG men's soccer team. Inevitably, what goes up must come down, right? After enjoying the high of a three-game win streak at the beginning of the season, the Spartans proceeded to grab their shovels and dig themselves into a three-game losing streak.
Both the Spartans and the Wofford Terriers entered Saturday's game looking to snap their respective losing streaks. The Spartans were the ones to come out on top when they beat the Wofford Terriers 4-0.
In the time it takes to cook a Hot Pocket, the Spartans already found their way on the scoreboard. Only a minute had passed when the Spartans pounced. All it took was an easy three-step process to scoring:
Step 1: Junior forward Travis Young passed the ball to fellow junior Thomas Campbell.
Step 2: Campbell crossed it to the left side of the box.
Step 3: Junior Tebatso Manyama tapped it into the back of the net from about as close as you can get to the goal without penalty.
The goal was Manyama's second of the season and UNCG's first of the game.
Young was determined to stay in the action, and instead of being part of the assist, the Raleigh native took center stage with a goal of his own at the 8:49 mark. Manyama looked for his second goal of the game but the ball deflected off of a Terrier defender and landed right at the feet of Young, who kicked it in, extending the Spartans' lead to 2-0.
With his goal, Young proved that the Spartan offense is well-balanced. He became the ninth Spartan to score so far this season.
UNCG came out of halftime sporting a 2-0 lead but it didn't take long for the Spartans to expand on their onslaught.
Campbell took over and gave the Spartans two insurance goals late in the game. His first came at the 56:01 mark when he stopped a pass from Manyama, freezing the Terrier defense in their tracks, then knocked it in.
