I'm not sure if anyone has noticed, but there's a shovel climbing down the window of the EUC Gallery. Well, not really climbing, but if you've seen the exhibit that's exactly what it looks like. The artwork in question is by Peter Goff, titled "You Are an Arm," one of the many pieces of student artwork currently displayed in the EUC gallery. "You Are an Arm" is not the only piece that Goff added to this month's display. He added two more, one called "10 Implements," and a still life painting. Gallery Manager Katie Claiborne, an art student here at UNCG, decided to do an exhibit based solely on the work of UNCG's graduate students. When asked if she had any favorite pieces, she said, "Oh goodness I think they're all great."
The only requirement for submissions to this month's show was that the artists bring their most recent and best work.
When it comes to some of the more unorthodox pieces, you might not be sure what you're looking at. For example, Garima Saxena uses map tacks to post a close-knit series of ink jet prints on the wall. Claiborne explained, "Garima is a film artist, so it was hard for her to do something, but she chose to show the process filmmaking without actually showing the film."
A personal favorite was "Folded Affirmation" by Mandy Newham. Claiborne says, "Mandy is interested in political cartooning. She comes into the figures and works with some of those ideas."
Other artists featured in the Graduate Exhibition are Kelly Queener, Anthony DiSarno, Jeff Bell, and Jules Rochan. Each artist brings something fresh and exciting to the gallery, from charcoal drawings to ink transfer paper. Claiborne has a few of her pieces on display as well. "I mostly do self-portraiture on other people, and I'm really interested in things that aren't seen as things that can be manifested through painting, along with thing that aren't. I'm pushing against ironic, and working towards honesty and acknowledging it for what it is," says Claiborne. "Robert with Red Paper" one of her self-portraits is on display along with two other pieces she submitted.
When asked what she wanted viewers to take back from the show Claiborne answered, "I think it's good for people to come and see the connection within its diversity, and the strength within our department."
The artwork in the EUC Gallery will be on display for the remainder of October and is available for viewing during normal EUC hours.
