No support for smoking

Issue date: 10/16/07 Section: Letters to the Editor
I became completely aggravated with the UNCG bookstore on a recent visit. Behind the Customer Service counter, a book titled The Joys of Smoking Cigarettes was prominently displayed. After throwing a fit, I previewed this garbage. Inside, the author celebrates the "joys" of smoking, including "A Ten-Day Smoking Program." Even several days later as I write this letter, I am thoroughly disgusted.
Let me make this clear: I will never suggest that the UNCG bookstore begin the book-banning business. However, I will accuse everyone at the UNCG bookstore of exercising extremely poor judgment. Why is this book being so heavily promoted?
According to the American Lung Association, at least 8.6 million Americans suffer from at least one serious illness as a result of cigarette smoking. Clearly, it is not a healthy habit! If the UNCG bookstore must keep this book in stock, why can't it simply be hidden on a bookshelf?
As a result of the horribly tacky judgment flaunted by the UNCG bookstore, I have decided that I will no longer visit the premises. As inconvenient as it may become for me to order my textbooks and other supplies online, it pales in comparison to the inconvenience caused by funerals I will attend for members of the UNCG community who begin smoking due to this book. I implore you to do the same.
