The UNCG Spartans picked the right time to catch on fire, defeating the Davidson Wildcats 4-2 last Tuesday night in dominating fashion, but the fire was extinguished when the Spartans fell to the College of Charleston 3-1 on Saturday night.
The UNCG Spartans fell 3-1 to the College of Charleston Cougars Saturday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Kareem Yearwood scored twice to lead the Cougars past the Spartans and to catapult himself atop the Southern Conference points and goals list for the season.
The Cougars struck early when Zach Prince scored from the right end line on what appeared initially to be a cross. Wes Knight fed Prince who booted it with his right foot into the box where it took a football-like hop and bounced into the goal past a diving and bewildered Chad Janda.
Though the Cougars controlled the action early, the Spartans had ample opportunities after the first few minutes and throughout the rest of the game but the Cougars goalkeeper Corbin Waller, a High Point native, was on the top of his game in his return home. Waller nabbed several Spartan crosses from the air that would have been potential scoring opportunities and made difficult diving saves off shots from Tim Masters, Travis Young, and Thomas Campbell to keep the Spartans from evening the score in the first.
Four minutes into the second half, Yearwood knocked his eighth goal of the season past Janda to give the Cougars a two-goal lead. Yearwood struck again about 20 minutes later when a long ball from Casey Gold took Janda off his line and out of the box to try to retrieve the ball. Yearwood beat Janda to the ball and poked it past him for his SoCon leading ninth goal of the season.
The Spartans avoided a shutout in the 88th minute as David Grayson scored on a shot that ricocheted off the right post and Waller and finally into the corner. The Spartans' Travis Young was credited with an assist on the goal.
Despite the final outcome the Spartans out shot the Cougars 19-13.
