UNCG's volleyball team was balancing on both ends of the win/loss spectrum this past weekend when they lost to Chattanooga on Saturday 3-0 and beat Western Carolina 3-0 on Sunday.

In their win over Western Carolina, sophomore Branagan Fuller led the Spartans with a match-high 27 kills, also racking up 10 digs. Catherine Hanners tallied a team-high 19 digs and setter Lisa Fawell had 48 assists.

The Catamounts' Meredith Harmon and Jelena Jakovlejic had 10 kills each and Liz Rondone had 12 digs.

The first game started out close, but the Spartans took advantage of several Western Carolina miscues and kills from Fuller and Kaitlyn Nortz. Kills from Jakovlejic and Katie Hennessey allowed the Catamounts to get as close as 23-17, but they couldn't stop the Spartans' momentum and UNCG came out on top 30-26.

The second game proved to be much closer as the two teams see-sawed back and forth. The Spartans finally pulled ahead with kills from Fuller, Nortz, and Emily Lindborg. The Catamounts managed to score three consecutive points to cut the lead to 29-20, but another kill from Fuller allowed the Spartans to take game two 30-20.

UNCG dominated in the third and final game of the match. Once they took their commanding 17-10 lead the Spartans sailed into victory harbor with a 30-19 win, thus sweeping the Catamounts 3-0.

The Spartans recorded a total of 59 kills and hit .326. The Catamounts only managed 41 kills and hit .231.

The Spartans got a taste of their own medicine when they were swept 3-0 by Chattanooga.

The Spartans were led by Nortz, who recorded a team-high 16 kills. Nortz was followed by teammates Katherine Hart and Kayren Finney who had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Catherine Hanners tallied 20 digs in the loss.

Chattanooga's Leslee Ball had a .500 hitting percentage with 25 kills. Laura Newberry had 28 digs, Bethany Herndon had 17 digs, and Jamie Engel had 12 digs.

In game one the Spartans responded to a Chattanooga error with kills from Hart and Nortz, which gave them the early 4-1 lead. The Lady Mocs fired back when they pulled ahead 15-8 and kept on going, taking game one 30-23.

The Spartans pulled ahead 4-1 yet again in game two. The Lady Mocs wouldn't have it and they cut the lead to 11-8 behind kills from Ball and Herndon. Chattanooga spit out four consecutive points and took the 13-12 lead. UNCG wouldn't let go willingly and they forced two ties. The Spartans could not stop the intense Chattanooga offense, though, and lost game two 30-26.

UNCG refused to be swept by the Lady Mocs, and in game three the Spartans forced nine ties. See-saw action took place once again, but the Lady Mocs ended that when they fired three consecutive points giving them the 17-13 lead. The Spartans took off on a 4-2 run, which cut the Lady Mocs' lead down to 19-18. The game entered a 29-29 tie but the Spartans could not pull out with the win and went down 31-29, thus losing the match 3-0.

The Spartans return home to Fleming Gym to take on The Citadel on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. and the College of Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2:00 p.m.
