The Davidson Wildcats suffered their first loss in eight games when the UNCG Spartans defeated them 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

With the end of Davidson's unbeaten streak came the extension of the Spartans' five-game winning streak.

Both goalkeepers were forced to work hard in the very beginning of the match. Davidson's Kyri Bye-Nagel managed to fire three shots, two of which were on goal, in the first 10 minutes of play. The Spartans' Katherine Ryan was forced to show off her talents as a goalkeeper when she made two jumping grabs to prevent Bye-Nagel from putting the Wildcats on the board.

The Wildcats' goalkeeper Bevin English also had to put on a show when she made two diving stops. One of English's impressive blocks was made on a shot from UNCG's Lauren Lopez from 20 yards out.

The Spartans were the first to break the silent battle occurring between the two goalkeepers when Kristin Player gave UNCG their first goal of the afternoon in the 16th minute. Teammate Jen Bronson fed a pass to Player, who was forced to battle the ever-present Nancy Haskell until the 18-yard box. Player fired the ball past the diving English, giving the Spartans the 1-0 lead.

In the 28th minute UNCG's Heather Mitrisin made a beeline down the far side of the field and maneuvered her way into the middle. Mitrisin then sent a pass to teammate Jenn Partenheimer, who shot the ball past the charging English making the score 2-0.

Davidson entered the second half of the match with a vengeance. The Wildcats tallied eight shots in the last half, three of which came from Bye-Nagel. Nothing came from their efforts but the Spartans did manage to add an insurance goal in the 77th minute.

Katie Jordan sealed the Spartans' fate when she booted in the last goal of the game. Kelly Attayek and Partenheimer were credited with the assist.

The Wildcats did have the 13-10 advantage in shots, but their efforts were in vain as the Spartans walked away with the 3-0 victory. Ryan racked up six saves on the afternoon.

The Spartans return to action when they take on The Citadel at home on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans then hit the road to play Furman on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2:00 p.m.
