UNCG's men's soccer team hosted two top ten teams this past week and not only did they lose both games, the Spartans were shut out and outscored a combined 10-0. Second-ranked Wake Forest pulverized the Spartans 8-0 on Tuesday night and 10th-ranked Creighton defeated them 2-0 on Saturday night.
The Spartans have hit the meat of their schedule and, from the looks of things, these tough games are taking their toll on the team.
The loss against Creighton marked the third straight for UNCG. They had won two games after a separate three-game losing streak earlier in the season, but just when it seemed the Spartans were ready to turn a corner, they appear to be temporarily derailed.
Creighton (8-1-4) tallied a goal at the end of each half to seal the victory. Thomas Gjoesund broke the ice for the Blue Jays when he headed the ball past the Spartan keeper at the 40:42 mark. A cross from the right corner was blocked off by the UNCG defense, but the ball fell at the feet of Danny Minutillo. Minutillo crossed the ball to the middle of the box and Gjoesund was able to use his noggin' to put the Jays up 1-0 before the half.
A stalemate ensued from the half until the 79th minute of the game. Both teams had opportunities at the net but neither team capitalized during this Cold War.
Finally, it was Creighton that struck again.
Tim Bohnenkamp charged the goal from the left sideline, but the swarming Spartan soldiers closed in on him. Bohnenkamp was forced to cross the ball inside to Andrei Gotsmanov who then tapped it in from six yards out.
Creighton's 2-0 lead would hold steady, despite several attempts from the frustrated Spartan offense. After an all-star performance from Thomas Campbell last week the red-hot scoring machine had gone cold. With just under 10 minutes to play, a shot from Campbell almost found its way into the goal, but it was knocked away by Blue Jay defender, Seth Sinovic.
Creighton keeper Matt Allen made eight saves en route to the shutout.
