Fresh off thumping The Citadel 7-0 on Thursday night, the UNCG women's soccer team defeated the Furman Lady Paladins 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans traveled to Furman, S.C. and came away with a crucial conference victory against the third place Lady Paladins.
Kelly Attayek and Mary Kate Towne each notched goals to lead the Spartans to victory. The win improves the Spartans record to 10-3-1 overall and keeps them unbeaten in SoCon play at 7-0.
Attayek's goal came at 35:14 off a Heather Mitrisin corner kick to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The goal was her sixth of the season, placing her second on the team in scoring behind Kristin Player.
Towne's goal came in the closing seconds of the match. With the Lady Paladins pressing to score an equalizer, Towne intercepted a pass and eluded the last defender and scored with only 12 seconds left to play. It was her third of the season.
With that victory the Spartans extend their overall SoCon unbeaten streak to 20 games. The loss dropped the Lady Paladins to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The Spartans outshot the Lady Paladins 13-10 and had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. They also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
UNCG defeated The Citadel with a one-sided effort of 7-0 on Thursday night.
The Spartans scored early and often as they went to their sixth conference win of the season. The win catapulted the Spartans into first place in the conference.
If one arrived 10 minutes late, they entered to a Spartan 3-0 advantage. The Player, Mitrisin, and Towne trio did the scoring during that period as the strong start took a bit of the wind out of The Citadel's sails.
The Spartans' next scoring burst came between the 25th and 37th minute of the game when UNCG put in two more goals. These goals came off the respective feet of Jenn Partenheimer and Katie Evans. Thus concluded the first half with a score of 5-0.
The second half of the game was a little closer as The Citadel finally found a defensive rhythm. This rhythm still could not completely contain the Spartans, who recorded two additional goals in this half. These two were credited to Lauren Lopez off an assist from Heather Duetschle, and a 25 yarder from Kelly Attayek.
The Spartans held the advantage across the board. They out-shot the Bulldogs 34-1 with 24 shots on goal and held a 12-3 corner kick advantage.
Next up for the Spartans are home conference matches at the UNCG Soccer Stadium against Appalachian State on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m. and the College of Charleston on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
