South Spencer residence hall started Halloween festivities a full six days early on Thurs. Oct. 25 in the form of their annual Halloween costume party.
South Spencer, home of Strong College, was abounding with costumes including the transvestite from Rocky Horror Picture Show, a werewolf, and the world's friendliest flasher. The event was held in the residence hall's main common room, which was decorated with streamers, fake body parts, and punch which steamed ominously.
Photographs of the event were taken by Christopher Hall, a semi-professional photographer and a former resident of South Spencer. He captured images of both the dance and portrait shots of residents in their costumes. Former residents and current resident's guests could also attend and participate in the highly competitive costume contest. Many had prepared for hours making their outfits perfect.
For many students this is an event that they have looked forward to since the beginning of the semester and they were not disappointed. "It was a very lively and upbeat party and I had a great time." remarked Chris Sanders, a sophomore dressed as Herbert, the friendly pervert from "Family Guy."
A staple of the evening and a tradition of utmost importance was the fabled "White Boy Dance Off." The rules of the competition were simple, dance as offbeat, awkwardly and uncoordinated as humanly possible. The removal of clothes was permitted but outright nudity was forbidden.
Over the course of two songs the males of the dorm were eliminated one by one for being deemed to skilled at dancing. Finally Keenan McKenzie was declared the winner after nearly 10 minutes of tirelessly dancing without rhythm.
"I love the idea of a college Halloween party, it was awesome hanging out with all of my friends and it was very fun," said Mellissa Taylor, a freshman. "I look forward to next's years party and I plan to spend a lot more time on my costume."
