Construction continues here at UNCG as the Petty Building is renovated with a new bridge and as the West Lawn in front of the EUC will eventually become "Kaplan Commons."

"There is going to be a bridge constructed from College Avenue to the front door of the Petty Building," says Fred Patrick, assistant vice chancellor for the office of Facilities Design and Construction. "It is for better access to the building for all people but will really be helpful for handicap access as well."

The cost for this bridge is estimated to be about $250,000.

Construction will continue into 2008 with the West Lawn, turning it into the new "Kaplan Commons," thanks to a generous donation by Randall Kaplan and Kathy Manning.

Kaplan is the CEO of Capsule Group, LLC, as well as the CEO and chairman of the board of Listingbook, LLC. Kaplan is also a member of the Board of Trustees here at UNCG, and is the immediate past chair of the UNCG Excellence Foundation, and has served on the Bryan School Advisory Board.

Manning is an immigration attorney with Manning and Associates, PLLC, and is also on the chair of the United Jewish Communities Executive Committee. She is the past president of the B'nai Shalom Synagogue Day School and she also serves on the boards of the Greensboro Symphony and Triad Stage.

"I feel that a campus and the aesthetics of a campus lay the foundation for how people feel about the community they are living in," says Kaplan. "The public spaces of a university should be inviting for students to hang out together and for faculty and students to talk"

The proposed project includes re-landscaping the entire lawn-new trees and plants, and ornamental shrubs-and some new benches, walls, and walkways. The dedication to the new Kaplan Commons is scheduled to coincide with the 2008 Fall Fest.

Thank you so much for saving the 2 magnificent magnolias and not butchering up their full skirts to the ground as God intended them to look!
