Greeks hate musicians? Musicians hate Greeks? Since when?
Guest Column

Issue date: 10/30/07 Section: Opinions
Based on the guest column in the Oct. 23 edition of The Carolinian, "So you don't like the Greeks?", there seems to be some confusion about Greek life and musicians. Although I found most of the clearly opinionated statements in the column to be shocking, nothing sticks out to me more than this quote: "... I cannot think of another group that respects Greek life less than musicians and there is no other group that mocks musicians more than the Greeks." Well, this is news to me. For those of you who do not know, the School of Music supports three music fraternities: Mu Phi Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Iota, and Phi Mu Alpha. Each fraternity is service-oriented, putting much of its focus on spreading music in the community.
I have personally never heard a fellow musician say anything negative about other Greek organizations on campus. As a matter of fact, I know several music majors who are members of other Greek organizations. Moreover, I have never heard anyone from another Greek organization say anything judgmental about musicians or music Greeks. If anything, they have seemed interested in our organizations and have been supportive.
Perhaps the author should consider finding a few more sources next time. If the author had taken the time to walk through the music building, he would see three Greek shadow boxes on the first floor (displaying who we are and what we do), and maybe even run into several students sporting their letters. Many music majors support Greek life, end of story.
