The UNCG women's basketball team is set to embark on the 2007-2008 season. They look to improve on last seasons 20-10 mark and senior Kristen Boone, a two-time All Southern Conference performer, will lead the way.

The Spartans lost three of their top four scorers from last season; Jasmine Byrd, Kaleh Latham, and Irene Otmiri, who head coach Lynn Agee described as "our leading scorer, leading rebounder and best defender from last season."

Besides Boone, the Spartans will be led by four other seniors Kemena Brooks, Meghan Chamberlain, Jasmine Dixon, and Britney Frazier. To demonstrate her faith in the senior class' ability to lead, Agee took the unusual step of naming all five of them captains as a class.

"They're all leaders. they're all strong people, strong personalities, but they're also very compassionate personalities," said Agee.

"Because we have five seniors that gives us a lot of experience and knowledge and hopefully some wisdom we can pass down to the younger players," said Boone. "We have a lot of teaching to do but it'll be fun."

The burden of replacing last season's standouts will also fall on the junior class of Ashley Mullins, Ashley Ling, and Gini Grimsley.

"[Grimsley] will probably step into the lineup and is going to have to score for us. [Mullins] hasn't played much yet due to an injury situation, but she's back on the floor and looking good," said Agee. "She's going to be a very big factor for us if we see any zones."

Despite having to rely on the emergence of new players, Agee is confident in this team's ability to compete and succeed in the Southern Conference.

"One of the biggest challenges is when everybody expects you to be down because you lost key people. To me that is a great challenge to motivate and to bring people along and make changes you need to make to still be successful," said Agee. "This is one of the biggest years in that regard, to challenge the coaching staff and players to be in the thick of it in the Southern Conference."
