UNCG's women's soccer team clinched the SoCon regular season title when they beat the College of Charleston 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon. Last Thursday evening the Spartans beat Appalachian State 2-1.
The College of Charleston struck first when Christy Barrow fired the ball into the back of the Spartan goal. Meghan Manthey maneuvered her way through the Spartan defense and sent a pass over to Barrow who barely got it past the Spartans' goalkeeper, Katherine Ryan.
The Spartans did not waste anytime striking back. UNCG's Tina Karam sailed a long pass to teammate Karla Davis, who promptly headed the ball into the right corner of the Cougars' goal, making the score 1-1. The goal was Davis' first of the season.
Both teams had several opportunities to take the lead but nevertheless entered halftime at a 1-1 deadlock.
The Spartans took the lead in the 73rd minute in what seemed to be a comedy of errors. Jenn Partenheimer took a shot from six yards out but the ball rebounded. Bronson corralled the rebound and made her attempt on the goal but the ball rebounded once again. This time the ball rebounded at the foot of Karam who knocked it into the left side of the goal, giving the Spartans the 2-1 lead.
Five minutes after the Spartans scored their goal the Cougars knocked in another equalizer. Brittany Schneider booted in a pass from Manthey to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team could pull ahead during regulation play and the two teams were forced to go into overtime.
The Spartans proved their dominance when Katie Evans scored the game-winning goal. Kelly Attayek was credited with the assist.
With the victory the Spartans clinched their second consecutive SoCon regular season title.
Thursday night found the UNCG Spartans in a fierce battle against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Through an incredible rain storm the teams fought back and forth, the Spartans finally becoming the victors by a score of 2-1.
