Don't forget to brake for pedestrians

Can someone in the UNCG community please explain to me why there is a habitual and obvious ignorance of pedestrians in the crosswalks by drivers on and around the UNCG campus?
This semester alone, I know of one UNCG student who was struck by a car and as a result, had to wear casts on both his arm and leg. I also have a good friend who was hit by a car that had not only ran a red light, but ignored pedestrians in the crosswalk. Fortunately, this friend of mine is a superhero and escaped the situation rather unscathed, but it is still cause for concern.
Recently, while waiting in the crosswalk in front of the Student Recreation Center, I waited in the crosswalk while three automobiles sped by, including a shuttle van from University Square apartments. Bright yellow signs in crosswalks throughout campus, including in front of the Rec Center, remind drivers and pedestrians of North Carolina General Statute 20-173, Pedesterians' Right-of-Way at Crosswalks.
If left unattended, this trend will soon become tragic. Let's not let this happen!
