On Thursday, March 27, a hunger awareness banquet was held in the Campus Ministries office. It was part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week that was sponsored by the Office of Leadership and Service-Learning, and was co-hosted by the Catholic Student Fellowship. Volunteers from different organizations and shelters, including Night Watch and Food Not Bombs, came to encourage students to get involved and help. Students and guests were served a typical meal that would normally be served at a shelter, including the option of rice or chili.

During the banquet, guests and students discussed ways in which to better serve the hungry and homeless community in Greensboro. Students were given unique ideas on where to get food and where they should take extra or bought food so it could be distributed properly to the hungry and homeless.

"If it is before nine, a good place to always take food is the central library," said Michele Forrest, a volunteer, encouraging students to donate. Shelters and organizations were also stated as good drop off places.

The group also had the chance to learn about items, such as specific vegetables and meat, that are needed in a regular diet to help the hungry have healthier lives. Forrest later helped students decide what were the best items to donate.

"Think wisely. If you buy cans, get the ones with pop tops because [the homeless] don't have can openers … when you are buying things think about if you could use it if you were camping because usually all they have is a fire."

Students were also reminded to use safety-to always take a friend and think when having a firsthand experience in helping.

The banquet was followed by the OLSL hosted "Homeless For A Night" event. Students were invited to sleep on the library's lawn to help raise awareness for homelessness. The event lasted all night.
