The Spartans began the week with an 18-7 record overall and were 4-3 in the SoCon. Though they had lost their last outing to Western Carolina, they had still won 10 of their last 12 games.

The week started on Tuesday with the Spartans toughest challenge to date against the fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary. UNC took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second.

Pedro Leon's triple in the sixth inning knocked in one run and brought the score to 2-0.

But the Tar Heels struck back in the seventh with two more runs of their own to make the score 4-1.

The Spartans had a last gasp in the ninth. The Spartans had the bases loaded with two outs but Spartan star Tim Carrier struck out to Tar Heel pitcher Nick Striz who earned the save. Wes McCall gave up the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season.

The Spartans returned to Greensboro Wednesday to face cross-town rival North Carolina A&T at the NewBridge Bank Park downtown.

UNCG took the lead in the first inning with a lead-off solo home run by Carrier. Ricky Orton hit a two run double later in the inning to give the Spartans an early 3-0 lead. Orton also singled home a run in the second to put the Spartans up 4 -0.

But the lead wouldn't hold. A two run home run by the Aggies Jeremy Jones in the third paired with one run apiece in the fourth and fifth.

N.C. A&T dealt a harsh blow in the sixth with a six-run rally to take a 10-4 lead. A two run single CJ Beatty and three-run home run by Joe McIntyre accounted for the majority of the Aggies runs in the inning.

The Spartans were able to take cut the lead to three runs by the eighth thanks to a Ricky Orton RBI single, and a bases loaded walk in the seventh and notched another run in the eighth but were unable to complete the rally in the ninth and lost 10-7.

Marquis Frink earned the win and Matt Bjorkstrom suffered the defeat to drop him to 1-1 on the year. Orton went 3-for-5 with four RBIs in a losing effort.
