The 11th ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (USA Today/ESPN) defeated UNCG 12-2 in the first leg of a home-and-home in Chapel Hill last Tuesday. Both teams entered the game 3-0 after they swept their respective series the previous weekend.
The lone two runs for the Spartans came in the top of the fourth inning when Sophomore Lloyd Enzor drew a leadoff walk. Senior catcher Ed Jayjack then sent a monster home run to right center, driving in Enzor.
Junior Warren Slack got the start for the Spartans but would only spend 2 innings on the hill, giving up 3 hits and 1 earned run while recording 1 strikeout. Sophomore right-hander Greg Davis would record his first career win for the Heels in his start. Davis pitched 5 innings, striking out 5 and allowing only 2 hits.
Alex Shelton would relieve Slack in the third inning and get tagged for 4 runs on 4 hits in only one-third of an inning.
Jacob Stallings got the big third inning started for the Heels with a double to left center. Stallings would then advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a Ben Bunting single to right.
Junior Blake Hassebrock would close out the inning for Shelton. Hassebrock got the final two outs of the inning when sophomore Tarron Robinson struck out and Mike Cavasinni grounded out.
Hassebrock pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1.
Robinson would hit a solo homer for UNC in the bottom of the fifth to give the Heels a 7-2 edge.
UNC would go on to add 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh and 3 in the bottom of the eighth.
UNCG would be held to only 3 hits while UNC had 16.
The Spartans defeated the Heels at home in 2006 when they were ranked third in the nation. UNCG will host UNC on Mar. 24 at UNCG Baseball Stadium at 6 p.m. in the last leg of the home and home.
