Junior Orcun Seyrek and Freshman Chanon Varapongsittikul won flight titles this past weekend at the UNCG Men’s Tennis Fall Invitational.
The Spartans opened the season with the invitational, which hosted student-athletes from Belmont, Chattanooga, UNCA, Elon, Garner-Webb, Tennessee Tech, The Citadel and Kennesaw State. Rain delayed action Saturday and doubles flight championships were cancelled Sunday due to team travel considerations.
Seyrek defeated teammate Timion Meijs 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the Flight A1 Finals. He finished the weekend undefeated at 3-0. Varapongsittikul beat UNCG’s Ahmet Sarioglu in the Flight A3 Final in straight sets 7-5 and 6-1.
The Spartans are looking for another great season after last year’s historical run. UNCG went 17-6 in the spring season and won the SoCon title for the first time since 1995. The Spartans also earned the first NCAA Tournamnet bid in their history. UNCG fell to Georgia in the opening round.
The Spartans will look to Seyrek to lead them as he has the last two seasons. He earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors two years ago and has gone 53-11 over the last two seasons.
