The UNCG volleyball team traveled out to Johnson City, Tennessee this past weekend to compete in the Buccaneer Classic . The Spartans came away with a victory over UNC Asheville and defeats to East Tennessee State and Austin Peay.

The Spartans opened the tournament with a matchup against a fellow North Carolina team in the Bulldogs of Asheville. UNCG came away with a 3-1 victory in the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, and 25-23.  Senior Caley Redden was the leader on the night, with 16 kills and added nine digs to help pave the way for the Spartans win.  One other Spartan was in double figures in kills on the night as Billi Baker added ten while four others had at least five.  Ariel Newman and Alissa Beaudway both had five kills, while Kayran Finney and Karrian Chambers had nine kills apiece.

In addition to the lead margin in kills the Spartans also committed eight fewer errors, 13, compared to the Bulldogs’ 21.  UNCG also controlled the net as they collected four solo blocks and eight block assists on the night, while Asheville was not able to record any solo blocks and only notched two block assists in the game.

After a good start in Tennessee on Friday, the Spartans were not able to keep the momentum rolling into Saturday and fell in both matches.

The host East Tennessee State Buccaneers was the first to down UNCG on Saturday with set scores of 21-25, 26-24, 25-17, and 25-18.  Billi Baker led the team with ten kills and on block in the losing effort, while Olivia Humprhies and Ariel Newman both added six kills each in the match.  Ari Lysacek led the team in assists with 17 and tied Kellie Orewiler for the lead in digs with 11 each.  The Spartans scored seven of the final eight points to claim the first set but would drop the next three to the Buccaneers.

After falling to the host early in the day the Spartans concluded the Buccaneer Classic in a loss to Austin Peay with set scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-9.  Olivia Humphries and Billi Baker led the way with six kills in the match while Kimiko Naito racked up 12 assists, and Baker led the way with 10 digs.  Austin Peay controlled play for most of the match, never trailing in the first set and holding a commanding 18-4 lead at one point in the final set against the UNCG.

The loss dropped the volleyball team to 8-3 on the young season and marked the final road tournament UNCG will be playing in this year.   The Spartans will open the season at home on Wednesday night against cross-town rival North Carolina A&T;, before hosting the Spartan Spiketacular this weekend featuring Morgan State, Norfolk State and Gardner-Webb.
